                     Symmetry Reinforced

To reinforce his composition (left) Vermeer counterbalanced the form of the map on the wall with the shape of the carpet to the lower left. Although the form of the carpet is smaller than the map it is much darker and has the same visual weight. The darker area of the window and its shadow were likewise counterbalanced by the rectangle formed by the chair against the wall in the lower left hand corner.

The ebony frame of the Woman with a Balance (right) was counterbalanced by  the form of the carpet in the very similar way. Vermeer uses these mechanisms to create a more permanent, rational and solid visual structure.
