The Lute Player

                                  Diagonals

Vermeer utilized diagonal lines to introduce dynamism into his compositions. If we trace the angle of the incoming light it appears that upon meeting the vertical axis it is reflected upwards at the same angle. In The Lute Player (right) it bounces briskly off the table following the neck of the lute. In the Woman Holding a Balance (left) the imaginary ray of light again changes its direction encountering the vertical axis at the very bottom of the painting, but this time follows the woman's gown and then the ermine border of the jacket back upwards.
