Asymmetry Vermeer realized that if he had also placed the figures on the vertical axis of the painting, our eyes would have been excessively attracted towards the center of the composition. We would consequently lose interest in exploring the rest of painting. The play between symmetry and asymmetry shifts our attention back and forth subtly from figure to ground. We are simultaneously reassured by the basic symmetrical foundation and stimulated by imbalance of the asymmetrical figure.
